In German folklore, the Weiße Frauen ("White Women") are elf-like spirits, perhaps rooted in Germanic paganism through tales of the light elves (Ljósálfar). They are described as beautiful, enchanted beings who appear at noon and may be spotted in the sun combing their hair, or bathing in a stream. They may guard treasure or haunt castles, and they beg mortals to break their spell, but this always fails. The mythology goes back at least to the Middle Ages. Jacob Grimm thought their link with white and sunlight came from the light elves (Ljósálfar) who lived in Álfheim under the god Freyr; they may also reflect older beliefs in ancestral spirits or ancient goddesses such as Holda, Berhta and Ostara. According to Grimm, the enchantment they suffer may symbolize the ban Christianity laid on the gods of the older faith. They have counterparts in neighbouring lands: in the Netherlands the Witte Wieven, in France the Dames Blanches, and their Low German equivalent is the Witte Wiwer; in the Alpine parts of Austria and the south of Germany they go by Salige Frauen. In the Netherlands the witte wieven are women of legend, sometimes kind and sometimes wicked, often linked with witches or ghosts and believed to live in burial mounds and hunebeds.
