In heroic legend, Eckart (also Eckehart or Eckewart) is the guardian of two young Harlungs who inherited the Breisgau, Breisach Castle and boundless treasure from their father Diether. He is himself a Harlung and famed for his loyalty. When King Ermenrich, their uncle, egged on by his adviser Sibeche, seized Breisach while Eckart was away, hanged his nephews and took their wealth, Eckart avenged them: he dragged Sibeche to the gallows during the Rabenschlacht and, with other heroes, killed Ermenrich. The Harlungs' treasure is said to be enchanted and hidden in the Bürglenberg near Breisach, guarded by Eckart's spirit, who tells every treasure-seeker that it is destined for the rightful heir. Hence the German proverb "Du bist der treue Eckart, du warnest jedermann", said of anyone who warns everybody. In Thuringia, Eckart walks ahead of the Wild Hunt (wütendes Heer) led by Frau Holle during the Twelve Nights of Christmas, telling people to step aside so they come to no harm. He is pictured as an old man with a white staff. When the host stays inside the Hörselberg, Eckart sits before the cave warning everyone not to enter the realm of Frau Venus, from which there is no return; this role has been known since 1453.
