Tefnut is an Egyptian moisture goddess belonging to the Heliopolitan Ennead. Atum is named as her parent. Shu is her brother and consort. Geb and Nut are her children with Shu. She takes the form of a lioness or lion-headed goddess. She helps Shu support the sky and maintain the world’s stability. In one tale she leaves Egypt for the Nubian desert as a fierce lioness. She can be identified with Bastet, Sekhmet and Hathor. This source describes Tefnut as goddess of the atmosphere near the earth. Her name is associated with the sound of spitting in the interpretation cited by this source. Art also depicts her as a lion-headed serpent. One creation version produces Shu and Tefnut through Atum’s spitting. Budge connects Tefnut as a goddess of the dead with drink for the deceased. In Budge’s account Tefnut is Temu’s left eye, compared with the moon. Temu, Shu and Tefnut form a trinity in the creation text cited by Budge. Tefnut is the feminine counterpart of the air god Shu. Her mythological role is less clear than his, but Egyptologists link her with moisture on the strength of a Pyramid Texts passage in which she produces water. Budge calls her the twin sister of Shu who typified moisture or an aspect of the sun's heat, and World History Encyclopedia calls her the mother of Geb and Nut, born so that humans would have somewhere to live. She is also one of the goddesses who could act as the fiery Eye of Ra. The name Tefnut has no certain etymology but may imitate the sound of spitting, since in several versions of the creation myth Atum spits her out. Pyramid Text 527 says that Atum sneezed in Heliopolis and Shu and Tefnut were born, while the Coffin Texts speak of Shu being sneezed out of the nose of Atum and Tefnut being spat out like saliva. In a creation legend translated by Budge, the god who speaks says that he had not yet emitted Shu or spat out Tefnut. Budge also writes that Temu gave Shu and Tefnut the magical force of his life through an embrace. In a spell translated by Budge, the left eye of the person addressed is likened to Tefnut and his right eye to Shu, who are called the children of Ra. Tefnut is leonine: she appears as a lioness-headed human as part of the Great Ennead of Heliopolis, often as a lioness, and can also be shown fully human. She also takes the role of mistress of the flame, adorned with a flame as protection against enemies. In the 18th and 19th Dynasties, especially in the Amarna Period, she was shown in human form with a low flat headdress topped with sprouting plants. Heliopolis and Leontopolis were her cult centres, and at Leontopolis she was worshiped together with Shu as a pair of lions. In a Book of the Dead chapter, Tefnut is named with Ra and Shu as one of the Souls of Annu.
