Ra (also written Re) is the sun god of ancient Egypt and one of the oldest deities in the Egyptian pantheon. His name is the Egyptian word for sun. He was later merged with other gods, such as Ra-Horakhty (the morning sun), Amun (the noonday sun), and Atum (the evening sun). Ra is almost always shown as the falcon-headed Ra-Horakhty with the solar disc above his head, and sometimes as a scarab beetle. According to the sources, Ra ruled over the sky, the Earth, and the Duat (underworld). By day he carries the sun across the sky in his solar barque and descends into the underworld at sunset. There, at night, his barque becomes the Ship of a Million Souls, which picks up the justified dead and brings them to the Field of Reeds, and Ra merges with Osiris as Ra-Osiris. The serpent Apophis attacks him every night, and every night it is defeated by the gods aboard the barque, helped by the justified dead. In the best-known creation story, Ra the Self-Created stands on the primordial ben-ben mound that rose from swirling water, creates Hu and Sia, and then gives birth to Shu and Tefnut. Another source says that the creator Atum manifested in the form of Ra, and that humans came from Ra's tears, or in some accounts from his tears and sweat. When Ra grew old and humans rebelled, the Eye of Ra, who in the Book of the Heavenly Cow is Hathor, was released to destroy them. Afterwards a weary Ra asked Nut to carry him into the heavens. Worship of Ra was established in the Old Kingdom and continued for almost 2,000 years. He is first mentioned in the Pyramid Texts, and his cult center was Iunu, known as Heliopolis. King Userkaf of the 5th Dynasty elevated the cult of Ra almost to a state religion and built a sun temple, and his successors called themselves sons of Ra. According to Richard H. Wilkinson, Ra is arguably Egypt's most important deity, and his cult declined only after the Roman conquest.
Konteks budaya
