Uranus or Ouranos is the primordial god and personification of the sky in Greek mythology. In Hesiod he fathers the Titans, Cyclopes and Hecatoncheires until his son Cronus castrates him.

Uranus personifies the sky and counts among the earliest Greek gods. The Greeks imagined the sky as a starry brass dome, and Ouranos was the literal sky just as Gaia was the earth. According to Hesiod, Gaia bore Heaven as an equal for herself, then lay with him and bore the twelve Titans, three Cyclopes and three Hecatoncheires. One source says Uranus and Gaia had twelve sons and six daughters. Uranus hated his children and hid them within the earth. Gaia made a flint sickle and had Cronus ambush his father; when Uranus came to lie with Gaia, Cronus castrated him. From the blood that fell were born the Erinyes, the Giants and the Meliae, and from the sea foam around the severed parts Aphrodite was born. In reproach Uranus called his sons Titans and said that vengeance would come afterwards. After his castration Uranus recedes into the background, yet he and Gaia warned Cronus that his son would overthrow him, helped Rhea flee to Crete where Zeus was born, and warned Zeus about Metis's son. Gaia, Styx and Uranus were frequently called on to witness divine oaths. According to one source, he prophesied the fall of the Titans, fulfilled when Zeus deposed them. No cult addressed directly to Uranus survived into classical times and he is not among the usual themes of Greek painted pottery, though one Orphic hymn is dedicated to him. He is identified on the Gigantomachy frieze of the Pergamon Altar, bearded and winged, and in the Roman era he was often depicted as Aion. According to one source, he does not appear in early Greek art, and Egyptian depictions of the sky-goddess Nut show how he was imagined. His Roman counterpart is Caelus.
