Šemík is a legendary white horse of the Slavic mythology of Czechia, clever and able to speak, owned by the squire Horymír of Neumětely. Horymír opposed Prince Křesomysl, who urged people to leave the fields for the mines. When the miners burned his home he took revenge, and Šemík magically bore him through the wind to Vyšehrad before dawn. Sentenced to death, Horymír asked to ride round the castle courtyard; Šemík then leapt from the Vyšehrad rock, carried him home to Neumětely, and died of his wounds. His soul is said to sleep in the Vyšehrad rock until Bohemia needs him. His tomb at Neumětely has been honoured since 1887. The legend first appears in the chronicle of Václav Hájek z Libočan and was popularised by Alois Jirásek.
