The mazapégul are mischievous night elves of the folklore of Romagna, above all the Forlì Apennines. They are grey-furred crosses of ape and homunculus wearing a red cap, the source of their mischief. They cause nightmares and choking, make things vanish, send dishes flying and braid horses' manes; they also sleep on pretty girls' stomachs and flatter them. Stealing its cap or scattering rice on the sill wards them off. They derive from the incubus and resemble the Laurieddhu of southern Italy. Giuliano Fantaguzzi recorded their lore in early 15th-century Cesena, the name appears in a 1487 contract at Forlì, and the red cap is now a Romagnol carnival costume.
