The hippogriff or hippogryph, from Greek híppos, 'horse', and Italian grifo, 'griffin', has an eagle's front and a horse's hindquarters. Ludovico Ariosto invented it early in the 16th century in Orlando Furioso as the offspring of a griffin and a mare, a cross thought impossible since griffins prey on horses. Owned by the sorcerer Atlantes and then ridden by Ruggiero to free Angelica, it can fly round the world and to the Moon. The word entered English before 1615, Gustave Doré often drew it in the 19th century, and today it is known through Buckbeak in Harry Potter.
