In the folklore of Lee County, South Carolina, the Lizard Man is an entity said to live in the Scape Ore swamp. It is described as bipedal and burly, with three fingers, red eyes and lizard- or snake-like scales. The story took off in 1988. On 14 July that year the Lee County sheriff investigated a car damaged overnight, and 17-year-old Christopher Davis then reported that a green creature about 7 feet tall had damaged his car. Media coverage brought more reports, and radio station WCOS offered a $1 million reward for capturing it alive. Joseph P. Laycock sees the case as a predictable pattern: a sighting, media attention, new sightings, then tourists and monster hunters. Ben Radford says several key aspects of the story wither under skeptical scrutiny.
