Indiana folklore tells of the Beast of Busco, a legendary turtle of unusual size that is likened to a snapping turtle. In 1898, farmer Oscar Fulk said he saw a giant turtle in his lake. In July 1948, Ora Blue and Charley Wilson reported a giant turtle in the same lake, which they estimated weighed over 500 pounds. The story spread and prompted a month-long search that drew national attention. Gale Harris tried many ways to catch it, including draining the lake, but failed; the photographs taken by a Life Magazine photographer were unusable. No conclusive evidence of the animal was found. Proposed explanations include a misidentified alligator snapping turtle or a spiny soft-shell or common snapping turtle. Churubusco now commemorates it each June at the Turtle Days festival.
