Folklore of northeastern Ohio and Michigan gives the name Bessie to a monster of Lake Erie, nicknamed South Bay Bessie or the Lake Erie Monster. It is reported to be snake-like, 30 to 40 feet long, at least a foot in diameter, and grayish. Sightings on the lake are reported as far back as 1793. An early written account is quoted by Oudemans from Rafinesque: on 3 July 1817 the crew of a schooner saw a creature 35 or 40 feet long, dark mahogany in colour, followed by a report of a copper-coloured water-snake 60 feet long. Also in 1817, the Dusseau brothers near Toledo met a creature on the beach shaped like a large sturgeon but with arms. In July 1892 the entire crew of a ship bound from Buffalo to Toledo reported another sighting. Rafinesque was inclined to think the 1817 creature was a fish, perhaps a giant eel, but Oudemans judged that Rafinesque had been the dupe of a hoax. The Bessie legend is celebrated today at the Lake Erie Monster Festival in Conneaut.
