Abraham Lincoln's ghost, nicknamed the White House Ghost, has reportedly roamed the presidential residence ever since he was assassinated in 1865, and his former homes in Springfield, Illinois, as well. Those said to have seen it include Grace Coolidge, Queen Wilhelmina, Winston Churchill and Theodore Roosevelt. Grace Coolidge is said to be the first to see it, in 1927, standing at a window of the Yellow Oval Room. In 1942 Queen Wilhelmina reportedly saw Lincoln at her door and fainted, though a 1996 Dutch newspaper article says she did not faint. In the early 1870s Lincoln's widow Mary was photographed at William H. Mumler's studio with a figure like her late husband behind her, which Stephen Wagner explains as double exposure.
