The Grafton Monster is a West Virginia folklore cryptid that was reported in and near the town of Grafton. The most-cited account places the first sighting late on the night of June 16, 1964, on Route 119 near the Tygart Valley River, with local journalist Cockrell of the Grafton Sentinel named as the reporter. According to Cockrell the creature stood seven to nine feet tall, had "seal-like" skin, appeared headless and made a whistling sound. His report caused a frenzy: local teenagers formed search parties, but the Sentinel eventually dismissed the story as "spring fever" fantasy and urged visitors to go home. Cockrell's account is still regarded as the most believable meeting with it. Interest in the creature waned for half a century and then surged after it appeared in the video game Fallout 76 in 2018. In June 2024 the city of Grafton held the first Grafton Monster Festival.
