Also called the Sister Lakes Sasquatch, the Dewey Lake Monster is reputed to be an ape-like cryptid resembling accounts of Bigfoot. People said they saw it in the summer of 1964 around Dewey Lake and Sister Lakes at Dowagiac. Witnesses spoke of a hair-covered figure about 10 feet (3 m) tall and 500 pounds (230 kilograms) with eyes that glowed. By June 1964 the tale was drawing national notice, after residents of the area said they had seen a big, hairy creature whose eyes glowed. Police combed the area and turned up nothing, yet the reports brought thrill-seekers and monster hunters flooding into the community. Chicago newspapers took to calling Sister Lakes "Monster Town USA". Local businesspeople profited from the excitement, selling "monster getaway gas", "monster burgers" and "monster hunting kits" that held a net, a flashlight, a squirt gun, a mallet and a stake. Several zoologists suggested people may have misidentified a bear or gorilla, while Cass County Sheriff Robert Dool and conservation officer William Rowe dismissed speculation of a monster. Within a week the hysteria diminished, and in a 1983 retrospective the South Bend Tribune suggested the monster was imagined by intoxicated strawberry pickers.
