The Bugul Noz ('Night Shepherd' or 'child of the night') is a night fairy or bogeyman-like figure of Breton folklore from Morbihan in Brittany. Sources mostly describe a little man, goblin or kobold. Émilie Carpentier pictured it as a small clawed man with fiery eyes and a whistling voice who menaced shepherds and labourers staying out after dark. In one tale it rides at night but turns back at crossroads to avoid the shape of the cross, and if it takes someone captive it drowns them as soon as the cock crows. Anatole Le Braz, who taught French literature, was told of the Bugul-Noz as a tall, ominous figure appearing at twilight; one informant instead saw it as a kindly spirit urging people not to linger outdoors after dark. It has also been described with an animal pelt that lets it take a wolf-like form, a big hat and a cloak, growing larger as it nears its victims. According to the de article its name comes from bugel (child, also shepherd) and noz (night), and it appears mainly in woods and on lonely paths; its tales come chiefly from the Pays Vannetais in southern Brittany.
