Dalam History of the Britons karya Nennius dan British History karya Geoffrey of Monmouth, pertarungan kedua naga menjadi nubuat tentang negeri.

The Welsh Dragon (Welsh: y Ddraig Goch, 'the red dragon') is a heraldic symbol representing Wales and shown on its national flag. Ancient leaders of the Celtic Britons such as Maelgwn Gwynedd, Mynyddog Mwynfawr and Urien Rheged were personified as dragons, as were later Welsh leaders such as Owain Gwynedd, Llywelyn ap Gruffydd and Owain Glyndŵr. The red dragon appears in the Mabinogion tale of Lludd and Llefelys, imprisoned and fighting an invading white dragon at Dinas Emrys. In the Historia Brittonum (c. 829 AD), Gwrtheyrn, king of the Britons, fails to build a fort at Dinas Emrys; a boy named Emrys tells him to dig up two dragons fighting beneath it, and the white dragon of the Anglo-Saxons is soon to be beaten by the red dragon of Wales. The flag with the red dragon became Wales's official flag in 1959. Military use of the word dragon (draco) goes back to Roman times, and the draco standard may have influenced the Welsh dragon. According to the id article the red dragon is popularly seen as the battle standard of King Arthur and other ancient Celtic leaders; under the Tudor kings it was used as a supporter in the royal arms of England, and today many Welsh institutions use it, including the Welsh Government and the Senedd. In Lludd and Llevelys, one of three plagues on the Island of Britain is a shriek that comes every May-eve over every hearth: men lose strength, women lose children, and all animals, trees, earth and waters are left barren. Llevelys explains it is the cry of the land's dragon fighting a foreign dragon. Lludd has the island measured, a pit dug at its centre and a cauldron of mead set in it; the fighting dragons fall, drink and sleep, and he folds the covering around them and hides them in Snowdon, so the outcry ceases and, as Llevelys foretold, no plague comes from elsewhere while they stay there. In Nennius's History of the Britons and Geoffrey of Monmouth's British History, the dragons' fight becomes a prophecy about the land. The white dragon at first has the advantage and the red, apparently weaker, recovers and expels him; in Merlin's prophecy the red dragon stands for the British nation, to be oppressed by the white (the Saxons), with mountains levelled and rivers running with blood, but at last the oppressed prevail and the seed of the white dragon is swept out of their gardens.
