The Shug Monkey is a creature of Cambridgeshire folklore combining the features of a dog and a monkey, said to haunt the narrow Slough Hill Lane.
Here Are Ghosts and Witches (1954).
In Cambridgeshire folklore the Shug Monkey haunted Slough Hill Lane, the road from the village of West Wratting to Balsham. It was pictured with the body of a jet-black, shaggy sheepdog but the face of a monkey with staring eyes. People took it to be a ghost or a demon. A local history page calls it a giant spectral dog linked to Viking myth. Local writer and broadcaster James Wentworth Day was the first to relate its stories, in Here Are Ghosts and Witches (1954). He quoted a police constable, A. Taylor, who as a boy knew the creature as half large rough-haired dog, half monkey, with large gleaming eyes; sometimes it shuffled on its hind legs, at other times it whizzed past on all fours. The children, he said, kept away from the lane after dark. Wentworth Day saw it as an odd offshoot of Black Shuck; the local folklorist Polly Howat, for her part, proposes that the two spring from Norse mythology. According to Howat, no sightings of the Shug Monkey have been reported since before World War II.
