In English folklore the Puck, also known as the Goodfellows, is a demon or fairy that may be a household sprite or a nature sprite. The word's origin is unclear: it is already found in Old English as puca, and similar words appear in Old Norse púki and in Celtic tongues as pwca (Welsh), bucca (Cornish) and púca (Irish). The Oxford English Dictionary leaned to a Scandinavian source, while Erin Sebo of Flinders University argues it came from Irish. Puck may also be called the Goodfellows or Hobgoblin, Hob standing in for Rob or Robin, after the figure Robin Goodfellow. Like calling fairies 'the good folk', the name aimed to please beings fond of flattery despite their mischief. The oldest 'Robin Goodfellow' reference cited by the Oxford English Dictionary dates from 1531. The de article describes the Puk as a dwarfish figure of Nordic legend (nordischen Volkssagen) living alongside people; fed and given drink regularly it brings prosperity, but mistreated it causes grave harm; that article also links it with the Celtic púca.
