Lydéric and Phinaert are two figures of the founding legend of Lille in French Flanders. According to the legend, around 620 the prince of Dijon, Salvaert, and his pregnant wife Ermengaert passed through Flanders and fell into an ambush laid by the local lord, the giant (géant) Phinaert. Phinaert had the prince and his men killed, while Ermengaert fled to a hermit in the forest and bore a son, later named Lydéric. As an adult, Lydéric learned of his origins and found Phinaert at the court of King Dagobert I in Soissons. On 15 June 640, in a judicial duel, Lydéric ran the giant Phinaert through with his sword and avenged his parents; Phinaert's lands passed to Lydéric, who founded the city of Lille. An old version of the tale is found in the Annales de Flandre. Processions of giant figures in Lille are known from the mid-16th century, and the names Lydéric and Phinaert for these giants are recorded from 1821; Phinaert is now one of the gayants (processional giants) of Lille. The legend inspired Alexandre Dumas's novel about Lydéric (1841) and an opera by Émile Pierre Ratez.
