The Grand'Goule, 'Big Mouth' in Poitevin, is a folk dragon of Poitiers, a sort of local tarasque. In St Radegund's time (6th century) it lived at the bottom of the Clain, entered the cellars when the water rose, and devoured the nuns of the Abbey of Sainte-Croix. Radegund drove it off with a small cross, holy water and prayer, or in another version with the piece of the True Cross, into the river. A charter of 1466 records a dragon in the Rogation procession at Poitiers. Jean Gargot's wooden statue (1677) was paraded while children threw casse-museau cakes and cried 'Boune sainte veurmine'; the procession ended in the 19th century and the statue is now in the Musée Sainte-Croix.
