The Cheval Mallet is a fabulous evil horse of the Vendée, Poitou and the Pays de Retz. At night it appears as a saddled white or black horse tempting weary travellers; riders never return unless they carry the fare or a St Benedict medal. It is seen as the Devil's tool, perhaps linked to Sleipnir and the Wild Hunt, and resembles Lou Drapé. Its name may come from a Celtic word for a trunk. Saint-Lumine-de-Coutais once held a Horse Merlet feast with an actor dressed as a horse around an oak, banned in 1791.
