The Peluda or La Velue, 'The Hairy One', was an ox-sized beast with serpent head and tail and an egg-shaped body of long green fur with poison spines. Refused a place on Noah's Ark, it survived the Flood and lived in the River Huisne, terrorising La Ferté-Bernard: it caused floods or spat fire that ruined crops, ate livestock and people, and killed with its tail. After it tried to prey on the maiden l'Agnelle, her fiancé killed it with a stroke to the tail, its only weak spot, at the bridge of Yvré-l'Évêque, and the victory was long celebrated. The name 'Peluda' was popularised by Borges in 1957; Cordonnier-Détrie saw it as kin to the Tarasque, and since 2007 Tuffé has a velue fountain.
