The matagot, also mandragot or chat d'argent, is a black-cat spirit of Breton, Gascon, Provençal and Languedoc folklore, which the French article says a sorcerer gets in exchange for his soul. It is generally evil, but a wealth-bringing matagot can be lured with a plump chicken and carried home without looking back; given the first mouthful at every meal, it comes home at dawn with gold coins. It can serve nine masters and is said to lead the last to hell; in Gascony a dying owner suffers until he frees it, and a neglected matagot takes cruel revenge. The matagot appears in the film Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
