Maelor Gawr is known as an early Celtic king and giant of Welsh mythology. His tale with his three sons, Cornippyn, Crygyn and Bwba, is recorded in a late sixteenth-century Welsh text; that text spells him Maylor Gawr and places him in Aberteifi before the coming of Brutus. According to the text, Maylor was taken prisoner at Cyfeilog, about twelve miles from his castle, and before being put to death was allowed to blow his horn three times. The first blast made his hair and beard fall out, the second his nails, and at the third the horn shattered into small pieces. His son Cornippin heard the horn and rode so fast that his hound's head was torn off; his horse cleared the Ystwyth River in a single bound. After fighting he was killed. The other two sons, Crygyn and Bwba, killed anyone who came near their strongholds. Present-day stories in Penparcau still tell of the headless dog of King Maelor's son.
