The lutin is a mischievous hobgoblin of French folklore and fairy tales: a small nocturnal humanoid known especially in Berry, Normandy and Picardy. In Normandy it plays a role like the household spirits of England, Germany and Scandinavia, while the Ardennes and Wallonia know a similar spirit called the nuton. The lutin sometimes becomes a saddled horse called Le Cheval Bayard and likes to tangle the hair of people or horses. In Marie Catherine d'Aulnoy's fairy tale Le Prince Lutin (1697), the lutin can become invisible at will and cross the universe in a moment. The name is attested as netun around 1176–1181 in Chrétien de Troyes and comes from Neptunus, the Roman sea god's name. Belief in lutins also spread to Quebec, Canada, where they were thought to take the form of pets; completely white cats were especially suspected of being lutins.
