Jenny Greenteeth, also Wicked Jenny, Ginny Greenteeth and Grinteeth, is a figure of English folklore. A river-hag much like Peg Powler and derived from the grindylow, she dragged children or old people into the water and drowned them. Her name is also given to pondweed or duckweed, which can carpet a small pond so that it looks solid and becomes a trap, above all for careless children; in that sense the name is common round Liverpool and south-west Lancashire. She is often pictured green-skinned, long-haired and sharp-toothed. In Lancashire and north Staffordshire she is Jinny Greenteeth, while in Cheshire and Shropshire she is Wicked Jenny, Ginny Greenteeth or Jeannie Greenteeth. Her name comes from the grindylow, also called 'Grendith' or 'Grinteeth'. She was likely invented to keep children from dangerous water, like the Slavic Rusalka, the Japanese Kappa or Australia's Bunyip, though some folklorists think the tale recalls sacrificial rites. According to the de article she is also called Peg o’ Nell in Cheshire and Shropshire.
