In Welsh folklore (llên gwerin Cymru), the Hwch Ddu Gwta is a supernatural sow associated with Nos Galan Gaeaf, the eve of the winter calends. In the south she was called Hwch Ddu Gota. Her name means the tail-less black sow. Her tradition is linked mainly with the north-west, especially Ynys Môn, but is also recorded in Clwyd and Morgannwg. On that night people lit great bonfires and gathered to feast, a custom that the first source says comes from the time of the Celts (Celtiaid) and rites linked with the festival of Samhain. The Hwch Ddu Gwta was believed to take shape from the last sparks of the bonfire and to rush after the last person to leave in order to eat them. People therefore hurried home chanting a rhyme urging everyone to be first at home. According to the second source, on that night the dead were believed to be seen at midnight on every stile, appearing in different forms depending on the region. Among the most frequently named forms were the ladi wen (white lady) and, chiefly in North Wales, this tail-less black sow. One rhyme says the black sow, together with a headless white lady, will try to catch the last person to leave. Local pictures of her varied. In Arfon and its surroundings she was believed to sit on top of the stile awaiting her chance, while in the borderlands (y Gororau) she was described with a round tail, writhing on top of the stile. The tradition was especially strong in Môn even in the first half of the 19th century.
