A hob is a kind of small household spirit in the traditional folklore of the English Midlands, Northern England and the Anglo-Scottish border. Hobs might live indoors or out and worked about farmyards, making them useful, though if offended they turned into pests. The usual way to be rid of one was to give it a new suit of clothes, after which it left for good, though the worst hobs could not be shifted at all. Hob is a pet form of Robin, itself a pet form of Robert, and is sometimes a general word for a goblin, bogle or brownie. In the north of England it is also tied to Old English þyrs and Old Norse þurs, 'giant', giving forms such as hob-thrush and hob-thrust. Yorkshire hobs were small, hairy, wizened men, kindly but mischievous; a famous one at Runswick Bay lived in a hobhole and was believed to cure children of whooping cough.
