Henwen, meaning 'Old White', is a sow of Welsh legend who, by the Welsh Triads, bore Cath Palug, the monstrous cat fought by Cai (Sir Kay) or King Arthur. In the triad 'Three Powerful Swineherds of the Isle of Britain' she was kept by Coll son of Collfrewy, swineherd to Dallwyr Dallben, in the Glen of Dallwyr in Cornwall. She was about to give birth, which prophecy said boded ill for the Isle of Britain, so she was hunted until she leapt into the waves off Penrhyn Awstin in Cornwall, landing again at Aber Tarogi in Gwent Is-coed. She then bore offspring in various places, some a blessing and some a bane: a grain of wheat and a bee at Maes Gwenith in Gwent; barley and a bee at Llonion; a wolf-cub and an eaglet on the hill of Cyferthwch in Snowdonia; and a kitten under the Black Rock at Llanfair in Arfon, cast into the Menai Strait, which became Cath Palug. Don Carleton suggests the Henwen tale is an allegory of Arthur harrying a female religious leader. According to the fr article Henwen is also glossed 'the Sacred Ancestor', and she brought barley and rye to Wales.
