Wirt Sikes describes the gwyllion as frightening female fairies that haunt isolated Welsh mountain roads and mislead wayfarers. They are portrayed as gloomy spirits more akin to hags or witches than the more benevolent ellyllon. Anyone who meets them, by night or on a misty day, is sure to lose the way. The best-known gwyll is the Old Woman of the Mountain, said to have haunted the Llanhyddel Mountain of Monmouthshire and said to typify all her kind. Local tradition held her to be the spirit of a Juan White who was thought to be a witch. According to Jones, at Aberystruth the Gwyllion often entered people's houses in stormy weather. They were welcomed with clean water and no knife was left in the corner near the fire, because people feared harm if the fairies were offended. Outdoors, a drawn knife was believed to drive them off.
