Gizotso, from gizon 'man' and otso 'wolf', is the Basque werewolf: a half-man, half-wolf monster living around the woods and appearing at night in chains. At Luzaide it is thought immensely strong, and at Agiano near Zeanuri it is held to be born of a beast and a woman; there it reportedly attacked a woman hurrying home. Sources differ on the woman's wounds: her breasts torn off or her eyes torn out. Gizotso is distinct from Otsoko, the personified wolf, and in 1612 Pierre de Lancre already wrote of a 'Monsieur La Forêt' haunting the Pyrenees.
