Basandere, 'lady of the forest' or 'wild lady', is Basajaun's wife in Basque mythology, a hairy wild woman with very long hair living in the Basque Pyrenees, especially the forest of Iraty. She sits by cave mouths or springs combing her hair with a golden comb and watching her treasure, as at the cave on top of Mount Mondarrain; she vanishes when approached. Tales of a shepherd stealing her golden comb are common. She resembles the nature-protecting 'wild women' and recalls Mari and the Encantada.
