The Dragon of Mordiford is a legendary creature said to have lived just beyond Mordiford in Herefordshire, where the River Lugg joins the River Wye, and accounts of its form differ. In one, it is a wyvern found in the woods by a little girl named Maud, who secretly raised it on milk. It grew huge, emerald-green and strong-winged, and began killing livestock and even farmers, but never harmed Maud, its only friend. A man of the local Garstone family, in full armour, faced it, turned aside its blast of fire and drove a lance clean through its throat, and Maud came out to mourn her pet. Another version makes the dragon serpent-like: a convict promised a pardon hid in a cider barrel by the River Lugg and shot it through the heart, but the dragon's poison ran into the barrel and killed him.
