The cockatrice is a two-legged dragon or serpent-like creature with a rooster's head, bat-winged in the French article. It hatches from a chicken egg brooded by a toad or snake; the Japanese version names a 7-year-old rooster's egg brooded by a toad for 9 years. It kills by touch, breath or glance, but the weasel is immune and it dies on hearing a rooster crow. The word entered English through Wycliffe's 14th-century Bible, comes from calcatrix, a Latin rendering of ichneumon, and has been equated with the basilisk since John Trevisa's 1397 translation. It adorned the drama of the Elizabethans and appears in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night; some say it 'died a victim of science' in the 17th century.
