The bishop-fish is a legendary 16th-century sea creature shaped like a bishop that, once caught, begged bishops for release, then made the sign of the cross and vanished into the sea.

The bishop-fish or sea bishop was first recorded in the 16th century. By legend it was brought to the King of Poland, shown to Catholic bishops, begged by gesture to be freed, and once released made the sign of the cross and vanished. Another was supposedly caught off Germany in 1531, refused to eat and died in three days; Conrad Gesner pictured it in his Historiae animalium. The Japanese article describes it as a large fish walking upright with leg-like and clawed arm-like fins. It has been explained as a large squid (Heuvelmans), angelshark, walrus or seal, and the idea was shaped by the Christian view that the sea too has clergy.
