The Cauld Lad of Hylton is the ghost of Robert Skelton, a murdered stable boy, said to haunt the ruins of Hylton Castle in Sunderland in the north of England. The events supposedly took place in the 16th or 17th century. In one version he was caught courting Baron Hylton's daughter; in another the baron, furious that Skelton had overslept, killed him and threw the body into a pond or well. Afterwards the castle kitchen would be tidied at night if left messy, or upset if left neat. A cook who stayed up saw the ghost of a naked boy crying 'I'm cauld' ('I'm cold'); once given a warm cloak the ghost left and the disturbances stopped. Its behaviour suggests a poltergeist, and other versions make the Cauld Lad an elf, barghest or brownie under a spell that only a gift can lift.
