The Bisterne Dragon is a legend of England's New Forest, set mainly in Bisterne but also involving Burley and Lyndhurst. Local tradition says a dragon made its den on Burley Beacon, some 3 miles east of Bisterne, and 'flew' to Bisterne each morning to be given milk. A brave knight, usually called Berkeley, built a hide and waited with two dogs; the dogs set on the dragon and the knight caught it off guard, though both dogs died in the fight. Other tellings say the knight covered his armour with glass, and that the dragon died outside Lyndhurst, its body becoming the hill called Boltons Bench. The written version, in the margin of a pedigree roll made before 1618 and kept at Berkeley Castle, names the slayer as Sir Maurice Berkeley, lord of Bisterne manor in the 15th century, whose descendants bore a crest of a dragon before a burning beacon. The supposed battle site is still known as 'Dragon Fields'. The ja article adds that the dragon came to demand the flesh of livestock and people as well.
