In Norse mythology Víðópnir is a bird living at the top of the world tree Yggdrasil, sometimes placed on the brow of another cosmic bird. According to the eddic poem Fjölsvinnsmál, Víðópnir or Víðófnir is a rooster in the crown of the world tree, at times pictured as a falcon, perched between the eyes of Hræsvelgr, the cosmic eagle, on top of Mímameiðr, a tree taken to be the same as Yggdrasil. He is golden and shines like a thunderstorm, guarding the integrity of the world tree and terrifying the giant Surt and the giantess Sinmara. He can only be killed with the weapon Lævateinn, which Sinmara keeps, yet she lends it only to someone who first brings her a tail feather of Víðópnir, a seemingly impossible task. Karl Joseph Simrock read the name as Windofnir, 'wind-weaver'. Jacob Grimm compared the rooster on the tree with the cock on maypoles and the weathercock on church towers, and suggested Christian missionaries took over the heathen symbol.
