The Dökkálfar ('Dark Elves') and Ljósálfar ('Light Elves') are two contrasting kinds of elves in Norse myth, one dwelling in the earth and the other in Álfheimr.
In Norse myth the Dökkálfar ('Dark Elves') and Ljósálfar ('Light Elves') are two opposed kinds of elves: the dark ones live inside the earth and are dark-skinned, while the light ones dwell in Álfheimr and outshine the sun in beauty. Both appear in the Prose Edda, written by Snorri Sturluson in the 13th century, and in the late Old Norse poem Hrafnagaldr Óðins. In chapter 17 of Gylfaginning, High says the Ljósálfar dwell in Álfheimr while the Dökkálfar live underground and differ greatly in looks and still more in conduct; the light are 'fairer than the sun', the dark 'blacker than pitch'. High also says the further heavens above, Andlàngr and Víðbláinn where Gimlé stands, are for now inhabited only by light elves. Since the idea is found only in Gylfaginning and Hrafnagaldr Óðins, it is unclear whether Snorri devised the split himself; some scholars, Anne Holtsmark among them with reservations, think it reflects Christian ideas of angels of light and darkness. Anderson's translation of the Younger Edda (Gutenberg) reads that the light-elves live in Alfheim and the dark-elves down in the earth, unlike in looks and more so in deeds.
