Sigmund is a hero of Germanic myth in the Völsunga saga, son of Völsung and father of Sigurð the dragon-slayer. He alone could pull the sword Gram that Odin had thrust into the tree Barnstokk. With his son Sinfjötli, born of his sister Signý, he lived as an outlaw, for a time as a werewolf, and then killed Siggeir. He is also mentioned in Beowulf and his story is adapted in Richard Wagner's opera Die Walküre.
