Set, also called Seth or Suetekh, is a child of Geb and Nut and brother of Osiris and husband of Nephthys. Deserts, foreign lands, storms, and chaos are associated with him, and one title calls him Lord of the Desert. In the Osiris story, Set's jealousy leads him to make a casket fitted for Osiris and cast it into the Nile. Horus then contests him through trials and battles and is ultimately declared the winner. The murder of Osiris became especially prominent in the New Kingdom. Set also protects the sun god Ra against the serpent Apophis at night. He was worshipped at Ombos from early dynastic times, while Horus and Set together symbolized royal power. The distinctive Set animal has not been securely identified with any real species.
