The ogre or ogress is a legendary monster, a large, hideous humanoid that eats people, especially babies and children. It has a big head, thick hair, oddly coloured skin, a huge appetite and great strength, close to giants and cannibals; famous examples are in Puss in Boots and Hop-o'-My-Thumb, and figures such as Grendel, Polyphemus and Humbaba are sometimes called ogres. The word ogre is French, from the god Orcus, first attested in Chrétien de Troyes's Perceval; the Italian orco was in use from the 13th century, and Giambattista Basile first spoke of female ogres. In northern Europe the ogre is thought fierce and an eater of raw flesh, yet also shy and timid.
