In Norse mythology Hrímfaxi is the horse of Nótt, the Night, while Skinfaxi is that of Dagr, the Day. Its name means 'frost mane', and the froth falling from its bit is believed to become dew on earth. In the Vafþrúðnismál Odin names Hrímfaxi as the horse that draws night over the gods and lets fall drops of foam each morning, which become dew in the valleys. In Danish tradition Hrymfaxe or Rimfaxe is the horse harnessed to the moon's chariot, drawing it across the sky by night; the name is explained as the rime-maned horse that pulls Night's chariot. The poet Oehlenschläger mentions these sky horses in his poem Guldhornene, and the arms of Faxe Municipality show a stylised Hrymfaxe or Skinfaxe as a pun on the town's name.
