In Norse mythology Hófvarpnir (Old Norse 'he who throws his hoofs about' or 'hoof-thrower') is a flying, sea-treading horse ridden by the goddess Gná, who runs errands in other worlds for Frigg. Gná and Hófvarpnir are attested in the Prose Edda written by Snorri Sturluson in the 13th century. In chapter 35 of Gylfaginning, High says Gná rides Hófvarpnir, which can travel through the air and over the sea. When some Vanir saw her pass through the air, Gná answered in verse that she was not flying but faring on Hofvarpnir, sired by Hamskerpir on Garðrofa; the source of these lines is not given and they appear nowhere else. Scholars cite Hófvarpnir and the eight-legged Sleipnir as examples of transcendent horses in Norse mythology.
