The Elder Mother, called Hyldemoer in Denmark and the Old Lady or Old Girl in Lincolnshire, is a being that guards the elder tree in English and Scandinavian folklore. Until recently, people in parts of England and Scandinavia said that before taking elder wood one had to ask her permission, or misfortune would strike the woodcutter. Danish tradition knows her as the Hyldemoer or Hyldequinde ('elder woman'), a dryad-like spirit dwelling in the elder tree, who is said to plague anyone building with its wood without first asking leave. It has been suggested that the belief came from Scandinavia and was brought to England by the Vikings in the time of the Danelaw. In later tales the Elder Mother shifts into a witch. In Somerset a farmer saw her, in the form of an elder tree, milking his cow; his silver bullet missed, but the old grandmother of the house threw burning coals at the tree so that it burned and the witch died. Another tale has the elder-tree witch saving England by turning a king and his knights into the Rollright Stones, then turning herself into an elder tree.
