Both the Völundarkviða and the Thidreks saga feature Egil as a hero of legend. His name derives from Proto-Germanic *Agilaz, and the same story surfaces in Old English Ægil on the Franks Casket and Alamannic Aigil on the Pforzen buckle. The earliest form of the legend seems to have been about a famous archer who, with his wife Alruna, defended a keep against many attackers, a scene also carved on the Franks Casket. In the Völundarkviða Egil is a son of a Finnish king, with Slagfiðr as his elder brother and Völund as his younger. The three brothers marry valkyries they meet in swan shape; Egil weds Ölrún, daughter of the Roman Emperor. As a brother of Wieland the smith he also belongs to the legend cycle of Dietrich von Bern. In the Thidreks saga he is a master bowman whom King Nidung compels to hit an apple placed on his three-year-old son's head; he readied more than one arrow, and the first split the apple. He also gathered bird feathers for the wings of his brother Wieland, and when ordered to shoot Wieland as he fled through the air, he deliberately hit a bladder of blood under Wieland's arm so his brother escaped.
