The each-uisge (Scottish Gaelic, literally 'water horse') is a water spirit of Irish and Scottish folklore, known on the Isle of Man as cabbyl-ushtey and in Ireland as each-uisce, anglicised as aughisky or ech-ushkya. Most often in horse shape, it resembles the kelpie but is much more savage. The folklorist Katharine Briggs judged it perhaps the fiercest and deadliest of all water-horses. Unlike the kelpie, which keeps to streams and rivers, it lives in the sea and in salt and freshwater lochs of the Scottish Highlands. The each-uisge changes into a fine horse or pony, a handsome man or a huge bird. A rider is safe only while it stays inland; once it sees or smells water its skin grows sticky and it carries the victim to the deepest part of the loch, then rips the body apart and eats all of it except the liver, which floats up. In human shape it can be known only by water weed or sand and mud in its hair. According to the de article, it counts among the most dangerous water monsters of the Scottish-Celtic legend world (schottisch-keltischen Sagenwelt).
