Folklore of the Anglo-Scottish borders, Northumberland in particular, tells of the Dunnie, a little creature much like a Brownie. The best known is the Dunnie of Hazlerigg (spelled Haselrigg by Henderson) in the parish of Chatton. Henderson says that, as with the rest of its kind, the Dunnie loves playing troublesome pranks. His typical trick is posing as a horse. When a farmer sets out to fetch the midwife, the Dunnie takes the form of his horse, carries them both safely, then suddenly vanishes in the muddiest part of the road. He also poses as a plough-horse: once harnessed, the harness falls to the ground and the horse races off across the country. The Dunnie was also said to wander the crags of the Cheviots, repeating in a melancholy voice a verse about treasure at Cockenheugh and Collierheugh and a lost key. From this song came the idea that the Dunnie is really the ghost of a reiver who hoarded his loot there and still guards it. A friend of Henderson's even pointed to the steepest rocks at Haselrigg as the place where the Dunnie used to sit at night.
