Some accounts give the name Delphyne to the monstrous serpent that Apollo killed at Delphi. The oldest known version, the Homeric Hymn to Apollo (6th century BC), has the god slay a she-serpent (drakaina) who is unnamed there and only afterwards called Delphyne. In Apollonius Rhodius' Argonautica, Apollon slew the monster Delphyne with his bow beneath the rocky brow of Parnassos. Homeric Hymn 3 describes the Drakaina as a fierce monster wont to harm men and their sheep. Whoever met her was swept away by the day of doom until Apollon shot a strong arrow at her near a spring at Delphoi. In the same hymn Hera gave Typhaon to her, and the Drakaina received him. According to the Suda, Delphi was named after Delphyne.
