In Irish, aos sí or aos sídhe names an elf-like otherworldly people of Gaelic lore, held to be the offspring of the Tuatha Dé Danann or of the old Irish gods. The term means "folk of the sí", the mounds they dwell in, seen as gateways to an Otherworld; in English these are called fairy mounds or hollow hills. They deal with humans and are variously called ancestors, nature spirits, or goddesses and gods. Another name is daoine sí, likewise "people of the fairy mound"; in English they are often simply "the Sidhe". In the 7th century bishop Tírechán called the sídh folk "earthly gods", and the 8th-century Fiacc's Hymn says the Irish worshipped them before Saint Patrick came. In Irish folklore fairies may be fallen angels whose sins were too slight for hell, or descendants of the Tuatha Dé Danann who withdrew into the Otherworld after losing to the Sons of Míl Espáine. They are often appeased with offerings, and people take care not to anger them. According to the id article, the aos sí are a supernatural race of Irish and Scottish mythology living underground or in an invisible world alongside ours, which the Lebor Gabála Érenn describes as a parallel universe. In Scottish mythology they are called daoine sìth.
